This week, we will learning how to synthesize as readers! We learned that readers use their schema (background knowledge) while reading and think about the details to form a bigger picture at the end of the story. We also learned that as readers, our thinking can change as we read a story!
On Thursday, we were synthesizing superheroes! This fit perfectly into our drug free theme of the day: Superheroes and silly socks!
We read the book, Spookley: The Square Pumpkin. As we were reading, we thought about Spookley and how he felt. Our thinking changed through out the story...we were synthesizing superheroes!
We have been learning about the three states of matter: solids, liquids, and gases.
Our big book in reading class was all about a girl who experimented with water and learned about how heat can change a liquid to a gas and how freezing temperatures can change a liquid to a solid.
In science, we observed how a liquid turned to a solid by making pumpkin popsicles.
This week in science, we explored different forces and types of energy. We read an informational book on the smartboard and wrote down four important facts about magnets! I also gave the children a chance to see magnets in action. We had fun cleaning up paperclips with a magnet!
This week, we started an addition unit in math. We discussed how adding is when you have two parts and you put them together to make a total number. The children also learned that the answer of an addition problem is called a sum.
Each day, we found all the ways to make 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9. The children used plastic bags with a line drawn down the middle and red and yellow chips inside to create different ways to make a sum.
Here are some pictures of us learning in math:
