Week 6: Number Word Bingo

We spent the month of September learning lots of different number concepts and skills in math.  Our first graders must learn their number words from zero-twenty.  One way we practiced our number words this week was playing Number Word Bingo.   We had lots of fun!

Week 5: Fiction or Non-Fiction?

This week, our reading story was a non-fiction book about schools long ago and today.  Throughout the week, we discussed the difference between fiction and non-fiction books.  Before we read our books one day, I asked the class to pick one of their books and decide whether it was fiction or non-fiction.  We formed two groups.

Non-Fiction Books

We also learned how to use a non-fiction tool; a Table of Contents to help us learn more as a reader.  During read-to-self, the children looked for other books that had a Table of Contents.  Look at what we found!

Week 4: Rocket Math

The first graders are busy learning their basic addition facts every morning in 1-A.  We have mastered the routines and procedures of practicing with a partner and taking a 1 minute test.  Now all of the students are working hard to try and pass the next rocket math level in order to memorize more basic facts!

First, we practice with our partners....

Then, we take our one minute test.....

We are shooting for the stars in first grade!!

Week 3: The Way We Start and End our Day!

I always tell my students that we need to start and end our day with a smile!
We also always begin and end our days with classroom meetings!

The morning meeting is a great time to greet each other, share things, and discuss news and events for the day.  It is also a wonderful time to have conversations as a group to make decisions and set goals for our class!

We also do calendar activities, read our morning message, and discuss the daily schedule.

The morning meeting sets the tone for our school day!

Here are some pictures of our morning meeting!
Love those smiling faces!

Week 2: Fun with QR Codes!

I love using technology in our classroom.  We have a smartboard, two student computers, and three I-pads.  During the year, I try to create lessons that are fun and engaging to help the students learn the important content.

This year, I am using QR codes!  QR codes are like bar codes.  The students can scan a QR code and it will take them directly to a website, video, or text.

Here are the kids rolling a QR Code Cube.  When they scan the QR code, a "Getting to know you" question pops up!

This QR code goes directly to a youtube video for counting by 5's and 10's!  The kids love scanning the codes and seeing where it will take them!

I am really looking forward to using
QR codes in the classroom this year!!
