All About: Holiday Cheer

I sure hope everyone is enjoying this wonderful holiday break.  We have received our fair share of snow, and I think we are supposed to get even more!

Our time off is going way too fast, and pretty soon it will be time to go back to school.  It already seems like the Christmas season is far behind us and it is almost time to getting back to business.

Let's try to slow it down and continue enjoying our time with our family and friends.

Here are some highlights from the last week of school.

All About: Clouds

This week, we learned about four different types of clouds.

Cumulus:            Big, puffy white cotton balls
Cirrus:                Wisps
Stratus:               Blankets, flat like pancakes
Cumulonimbus: Storm clouds

The children used cotton balls to replicate what each type of cloud looks like.

All About: Picture Perfect Weather

This week we started learning about different types of weather in Science.  The children learned about the different types of weather that can occur during the different seasons.  We also learned about different weather tools that measure weather.

YOURERIE

To kick off our weather unit, the children drew beautiful winter weather pictures for the Jet 24 News Station.  They have a segment every morning called Picture Perfect Weather Pictures.  Your child's weather picture could be on the news.

All About: Wants and Needs

This week we were wrapping up our unit on Community Workers by learning about Goods and Services and Wants and Needs.

We learned that there are specific things we need to live and stay healthy:  water, food, shelter, air, clothes, and love.

We ended the week by creating "Wants and Needs" holiday stockings.  The children put the Needs on one side of the stocking and then they were able to flip through a toy catalog to find everything they want during this holiday season!

All About: Courtesy and Confidence

The first grade classes were lucky to spend a half hour with Mr. Lee from Lund Martial Arts Academy on Wednesday.  A big thanks to Brianna Cassidy for bringing in a post card to invite them to our school.  It was a great program that taught the kids about how to be courteous and have confidence at school!

All About: Reading Tests

Beginning in the 2nd quarter, your child will now be completing a reading test that will be worth a grade and put on the 2nd quarter report card.  There are four reading tests per quarter.  Each test is based on the reading and vocabulary words that we learned for two weeks.

During the first quarter, we took reading tests together for practice.  Now that they are worth a grade, I still go over the entire test with the class, but then the students are responsible for answering the questions.  While the children are taking the test, I walk around to make sure the students are understanding the questions, I will read a word or words to students who need help.

Below is a detailed explanation of the First Grade Reading Assessments.

Vocabulary
We learn six vocabulary words in one reading theme (A reading theme lasts for two weeks).  In school, we discuss these words and practice them.  These vocabulary words are also sent home in your child's homework packet.  Children are expected to read the sentence and fill in the blank with the correct vocabulary word.

Reading Comprehension:  Within the Text
These questions relate to our Big Book that we read in class for the past two weeks.  We do lots of activities in class with the story.

Reading Comprehension:  Beyond the Text
These questions that go "beyond the text"  focus on the skills we learned throughout the two weeks.  Many questions reflect the reading strategies we have learned in class.  The students are able to reread a passage and think about the correct answer based on the skills that they have learned as being good readers.

Back of the Test
The back of the test has the common core standards that are being tested.  If a child misses a question, I will mark it on the back of this sheet.
