Week 27: St. Patrick's Day, Springtime, and Easter....Oh My!

It seems like the last couple weeks we have been celebrating a lot of things!  We are so very excited for Spring to officially be here.  We have enjoyed several days outside for recess and can't wait to enjoy the nicer weather as it soon will be a constant instead of just a maybe.

During our plant unit, we learned how you living things need water to survive.  We also made a beautiful grammar garden to decorate our hallway.

We also celebrated St. Patrick's Day and Easter all in less than a week!

Thank you to Mrs. Timmers, Mrs. Kedzierski, Mrs. Barlow, and Mr. Vickey for planning lots of fun springtime activities!  The kids had a blast!!

Happy Easter Everyone!

Week 26: All About Books and Research Projects

I think it is amazing what these first graders can do!  During the months of February and March, we have been learning how to write non-fiction All-About books.

First, the children learned to write about topics that they already knew a lot about.
Then, we started to learn how to research topics that we didn't know a lot about.

As a class, we wrote our first All-About/Research Book about Penguins.  The children learned that they could use books as a resource to learn information.

Then, we discovered that the internet and search engines are also great tools to use when researching a topic.  We researched All About Cheetahs together by using the kid-friendly search engine:  Kiddle.

For our last research project, we are working in groups and using the I-Pads to research different topics like; clown fish, coral reefs, the rainforest, and meerkats.
